No, You Cannot Defend Pewdiepie
Hello, CyberNinjas. I normally don't give my 2 cents on controversy surrounding other content creators, but I couldn't resist with this one. I'm going to just go out on a limb and say that defending Pewdiepie is futile, and makes you look racist.
I'll start by saying I didn't really find Pewdiepie funny. This may have you thinking that I'm biased because of that, and I'll tell you that no, I am not. I didn't find his form of comedy funny before the controversy surrounding him began. Sure, he has a HUGE amount of fans, and that's good for him, but I think he's someone who can't be defended or excused for having content that has "Death to all Jews" in it. That's a place you don't go to for comedy, it's not even funny.
Recently, he's been in hot water again for saying "Nigger" in one of his videos. People have been defending him for saying the racial slur by saying things like "He just made a mistake why be mad at him? He just said the N word get over it! Everyone curses or says something they shouldn't say when they get mad while playing a video game!" No. There is no excuse for this. If you've watched any of our videos you'd know that we curse profusely, but even when any of us got upset, we didn't use racial slurs. I'm pretty sure if anyone else had used racial slurs during an online game they would be labeled a troll. So why does Pewdiepie get a free pass? Because he's YouTube famous? Get outta here. You don't say "Nigger" Casually unless you're racist. Point blank period. There is no way around this and there is no way in defending this.
It doesn't matter who you are or what societal status you are in, it's not OK to use racial slurs in an effort to make a tasteless joke. Defending this in the name of free speech doesn't make it right either. The only people who come to mind who are able to use racial slurs in jokes are the makers of South Park , but even then they're making a social commentary out of it. They're crafting the joke in a way to raise a mirror to Humans to show us how we act in our day to day lives, they just add comedy to it. What Pewdiepie has done looks more like crying out for attention when he already has the masses. I understand Law # 6 "Court attention at all costs" but think about what kind of crowd you're going to gather if you're commonly using racism to "trigger" people and cause controversy.
In this business of social media, your image means everything. If you're a voice on a microphone or a face in a video or live stream, or a blogger it is imperative that you know your personality is what's selling you to other people. It's what's getting you those followers and subscribers. It's what's netting you those high views and earning your income. If you want to attract racists and hateful people with your antics, you're free to do that, just know that you're going to have that kind of fanbase. Here at N8KD Media Gaming and Technology though, we respect and value diversity. And no, we're not racist. That's it for today CyberNinjas, til next time.
