Mobile MMORPG Games: A Second Opinion
In short, my reception of Mobile MMORPG games is that they're unfair. Yep, Mobile MMORPG's are unfair. "Why are they unfair?" You ask? -Clears throat- I'll tell you why...Mobile MMORPG games are fun at first. You raised a low leveled character from level 0 to 100+ super fast and got a bunch of good gear that does massive amounts of damage to mobs and everything is fun and stuff. Then you hit a wall; you're not doing much damage to higher level enemies and you can barely survive in the endgame levels. You're also getting slaughtered in PvP because you're not able to deal enough damage to your opponent nor are you able to survive their attacks. The only way to advance and get stronger in the majority of these games is to pay.
I can hear some of you out there saying "So what? It's my money and it shouldn't be a problem for me if I want to be the best and strongest by paying for it." And you're entitled to your opinion, just like I am to mine. I don't think it's fair that every player has to pay to become the best. That ruins the entire reason for playing or even making a free-to-play game. Take Warframe for example; You can advance to the max potential of all of your items for free. You can also trade items with other players for platinum and purchase the slots to expand your arsenal. You don't necessarily have to spend a dime to get the most out of the game.
I know I used a PC/Console game as an example in comparison to a Mobile MMO, but my point is this, gating the most powerful items in a game behind a pay wall or pay level is money grabbing, unfair, sleazy, and poor game design. It's very sad and maddening that this is a norm. I have yet to come across a Mobile MMORPG that is truly free and allows players to get the most out of it for free, and players aren't pressured into paying to advance. Why make it free if it will be integral for players to pay the dev to continue to the end? They were better off putting a price on the app if they were going to do that. World of Warcraft has a subscription to keep playing in addition to players having to buy the expansions and the game is doing alright.
C'mon game designers, You're better than that. I get that there is a profit that needs to come out of this, but if you honestly make a free to play, make it that. People will easily stop playing the game and delete it from their phone and move on to the next. Your goal should be to keep players happy and engaged, not get as much money out of them as possible. Don't folks know that a happy customer = a good paying customer?
Anyways that's it for now. Let me know what you all think about Mobile MMORPG's. Do you agree with me? Or do you have another viewpoint that I should consider? Let me know.
Til Next time, CyberNinjas.
